Your first Studio Ghibli movie: three different starting points

By Cinemovie · Published

A first Studio Ghibli film is easier to choose by mood than by reputation. My Neighbor Totoro offers small discoveries, Kiki’s Delivery Service follows the work of becoming independent, and Spirited Away places its heroine in a strange world with more immediate danger. None requires watching the others first.

My Neighbor Totoro (1988): discovery over plot mechanics

Two sisters move to the countryside near their hospitalized mother and encounter forest spirits. Choose it if you want a film that makes room for curiosity, surroundings and small moments instead of a constant sequence of obstacles.

A quieter tone does not mean that nothing upsetting happens: worry about a parent’s health is part of the premise. For shared viewing, consider the particular child or adult watching with you rather than assuming all animation has the same intensity.

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989): a new place and a first job

A young witch leaves home and starts an air-delivery service. Of these three, this is the most direct starting point if you want the fantasy to frame an everyday problem: learning how to work and belong somewhere unfamiliar.

Choose Kiki when you want a character-focused story about independence rather than a large fantasy mythology. You do not need to study a fictional world or remember earlier films to follow her situation.

Spirited Away (2001): enter the unfamiliar

Chihiro becomes trapped in a world of spirits after her parents undergo a transformation. Choose it for the pleasure of exploring an environment whose rules are initially unclear. Its sense of discovery comes with separation, unsettling images and danger.

If a viewer is sensitive to frightening transformations, preview the premise and age guidance before choosing it for them. For someone ready for a more demanding fantasy, that uncertainty is part of its appeal.

Do these movies have a watch order?

These are separate stories, so release order is optional. Start with the mood that fits tonight. If you are choosing for several people, agree on how much tension everyone wants first; the label “animated movie” does not make the three experiences equivalent.
